Choosing The Right Club During A Game Of Golf

Posted by admin | Sports Travel | Posted on March 22nd, 2010

When you are playing a game of golf, one of the ways that you can ensure good performance is to have a good discretion when it comes to picking out the right golf club. In any given situation, you are faced with 14 different choices. The trick to being an expert golfer is being able to spot these situations when they come up, and decide which club to use from there. This is how you begin to truly improve your game, since each club has a very specific hitting ability. There are many different factors to observe when picking a golf club. Here are the main ones, and how you can analyze them to choose a golf club.

The distance between you and the target is the biggest factor in choosing the club. Since you can pretty much line them all up from the least to the greatest hitting power, you will be able to choose one that is in the correct range. Irons and Wedges are usually best if you are closer. They don’t have as much hitting power as the long-range clubs, but they have the higher accuracy that you will need to hone in on your target. However, if you are still close to the beginning of the course (perhaps in the par-six or par-five zones), you will want to pick the long-range clubs. These include the Fairway woods, or the driver. These will allow you to really put your muscle into the swing and hit the ball a long way.

The wind is something that the real expert golfers really take into account, although often its importance is lost on the newer golfers. If the wind is blowing particularly hard in the direction that you wish to hit the ball, you can drop down to a less powerful club in order to allow the wind to pick up the slack. The same goes if the wind is coming forcefully towards you, in the opposite direction of your target. You will have to hit the ball extra hard in order to make up for the undesirable wind conditions, so choose a club that reflects this change. Usually it can be very hard for a beginner to determine how the wind strength and direction will affect their shot, so don’t worry if the concept is lost on you at first. It just takes experience to start to make the connections.

Besides the horizontal distance between you and the target, you also need to consider the vertical distance. Hitting to a plane that is higher than your current one requires more club power, which means that you should probably switch to the club that is one rank above the one you would have chosen. The same goes if the ground is lower. If you use a regular club to hit to a target that is 10 feet lower than you, chances are you are going to overshoot it. By using a smaller club according to the change in elevation, you will avoid quite a few lakes and sand traps. Always plan out your shot thoroughly, and consider all of the elevations and the general shape of the golf course.

The surface of the golf course is the final thing that you want to consider, and is probably the easiest. If you are in difficult terrain, your top priority is not necessarily to get the ball to the hole, but rather just to get onto better terrain that will allow a better shot. Therefore you shouldn’t try to choose the more powerful clubs. Instead, stick with the smaller ones and get yourself back into the game as best as you can. High loft irons are good for this purpose, instead of drivers or fairway woods. It may be difficult to remember all of these factors at first, but as you get more involved with golfing you will become very familiar with them.

Choices You Face When Picking Golf Clubs

Posted by admin | Sports Travel | Posted on March 21st, 2010

With so many new types of golf clubs hitting the market every year, it is an understatement to say that it can be a challenge to pick new clubs. If you are new to the world of golfing, you will be shocked at the sheer number of options that you will have when picking your clubs. Everything about it can be changed and customized to fit your own needs. Choosing the right golf club is very important in order to ensure that your money is well-spent and your game will hopefully improve as a result of the new clubs. Therefore you should pay attention to the following factors when trying to choose the right golf clubs.

Some would argue that the most important part of the golf club is the shaft. This is the metal rod that connects the grip to the head. You can change many things about this, including the length and the density. Usually you will have learned to golf with clubs that have certain properties, so you may want to stick with these. However, if you are fine with coping in order to improve your game then you may find it worth it to completely grow accustomed to a new style of golf club. There are many different ways to find the correct length and density for you, and you should pay attention to all of them.

The size of the head is also a very important factor in your purchase (and your swing of whatever clubs you end up purchasing). The smaller it is, the more control you will have over it. However, the larger it is, the more you are able to hit the ball since there is a larger area available on the side of the club. The type you choose can also affect your swinging, since different materials have significantly different weights and feels. Give each of them a test swing before you commit to any size, so that you know what youa re dealing with for every single type.

The handle of the club is another important part. You will probably be faced with a few different choices, and hopefully you will be given the chance to try out a few of them before you make up your mind. The handle should be comfortable to grip, but you should always make sure that it allows you to grip it tight enough so that it doesn’t fly out of your hands when you make your swing. If your palms tend to sweat more than the average person’s, then you might look for something that can combat this more effectively. It all depends on your personal needs.

Last but certainly not least, you will want to carefully consider the cost of the clubs that you are looking at. If you are not much of a player and you only go out for the occasional casual game, then you don’t want to spend an obscene amount of money on your clubs. However, if you are looking to improve your game to the best of your ability and perhaps play in tournaments, then a nice set of clubs could be a worthwhile investment. Just consider how much you think they can help you, and how much time you will be spending using them to make sure that it is worth the money.

All of the things mentioned so far will play a huge role in your choice. If you visit a decent club store and speak with them about all of the things you are looking for in a golf club set, they can probably help you greatly in narrowing down the specifications of what you are looking for. Try out as many clubs as you can, and don’t settle until you have experimented with all of your options. This will lead to you choosing the best golf clubs possible.

How to Choose a Summer Camp

Posted by admin | Camping | Posted on March 21st, 2010

Choosing the right summer camp for your child can be a challenging and sometimes overwhelming task. Since there’s a seemingly endless variety of choices to consider, matching the ideal camp to your child’s interests, personality, and busy schedule can be daunting. Furthermore, as a parent, you have the responsiblity of ensuring the camp you choose for your child is operated in a safe and appropriate manner for your child’s age and skill levels.

The following is a camp selection checklist for parents to consider when considering summer camp opportunities for their kids:

1. Identify the camp’s program emphasis.

Every camp has a different philosophy and program emphasis. Some camps promote structured group activities, while others give campers more individualized freedom to pick and choose the individual activities that appeal to them. Some camps offer strictly traditional activities, while others may focus exclusively on sports, drama, or surfing. Or, maybe your child would flourish in a competitive camp environment whereas another child would be better off participating in non-competitive camp activities. By knowing your child’s personality, interests, personality traits, and learning style, you can better identify the right camp for you.

2. Confirm that the camp is accredited by the American Camp Association.

In order to earn accreditation by the American Camp Association (ACA), camps must comply with up to 300 best-practice industry standards relating to camper health, safety, supervision and activity planning and execution which are crucial to a camp’s operation.

3. Ask about the camp director’s background.

To ensure that the camp director is qualified, make sure he or she meets the minimum standards set forth by the ACA. Such standards recommend that camp director holds a bachelor’s degree, has in-depth experience in camp administration, performed in-service training during the last three years, and is at least 25 years old.

4. Camper-to-counselor ratios. To make sure your child is getting the individual attention and supervision he or she needs for his or her age, compare the camp’s counselor-to-camper ratio to ACA standards. For day camps, the general ratios range from 8:1 for 6, 7 and 8 year olds, to 10:1 for 9 to 14 year olds, and 12:1 for campers ages 15 to 17. For sleepaway camps, the general recommended ratio is 6:1 for 7 and 8 year olds, 8:1 for 9 to 14 year olds and 10:1 for campers ages 15 to 17.

(Please note, the above-cited child-to-counselor ratio standards are only ACA’s general, MINIMUM recommendations and may vary depending on various situations and/or conditions. Moreover, there could be additional standards relating to specific programs and/or activities where more supervision may be prudent, if not required. Accordingly, you should use your own judgement and conduct your own research to decide what is appropriate for you and your child.)

5. Inquire about camp staff: Your child’s counselors can make or break a child’s camp experience.

In addition to facilitating camp activities, counselors serve as role models and should be dependable, trustworthy, and show enthusiasm for their job. For safety reasons, counselors should also be CPR and First Aid-Certified and have undergone criminal background checks prior to employment by the camp.

6. Accommodation of special needs.

If your child has special needs due to an allergy or other medical condition, be sure to ask if the camp is equipped to handle these requirements.

7. Find out about how the camp handles discipline.

As in any organization, rules need to be followed and the camp’s disciplinary approach should be fair, reasonable and openly communicated. Positive reinforcement, a sense of fair play and assertive role-modeling are important things to look for. If penalties apply to certain violations, camp staff should apply them fairly, calmly and without unnecessary criticism.

8. Check the camp’s references.

References can provide you with a glimpse of the experiences others have had at a camp, and they are an important way of checking out a camp’s track record and reputation. Before you choose a camp, the camp director should be willing to provide references upon request.

Good luck choosing a camp and have a great summer!

Choosing A Flex Rating For Your Golf Clubs

Posted by admin | Sports Travel | Posted on March 20th, 2010

When you pick golf clubs, you may be overwhelmed by how many things you have to take into consideration. The length of the shaft, the weight of the head, the grip, and many other smaller details combine to make clubs that are perfect for your golfing style. Perhaps the most important factor is that of the flex of the golf clubs that you are buying. There are different flex ratings for different golf clubs, and choosing the right one can have a great positive effect on your game. It may be difficult to understand at first, but you should be able to pick a shaft with the perfect flex for you with no problem after you familiarize yourself with some of the basics of shaft flex.

The bend of a shaft is very subtle and imperceptible, and causes the greatest effect during your swing. The force and momentum of the club head cause a very small flex in the shaft. Depending on the material and production techniques used on your club, this flex can range from extremely stiff to fairly flexible. If you aren’t sure about the particular clubs that you have been using in the past, then you may consider asking a golfing expert to look at them and see if he can’t discern it. If you can find out what you have been using previously, then you will have a much easier time switching to something new.

The four main flex ratings are L, R, S, and XS. These stand for Ladies, Regular, Senior, and Extra Stiff. Usually L, R, or S should work fine for the casual player, so it is a good idea to simply try out the golf clubs in the category you fit into. You will find more often than not that this level of flex is perfect for you. However, if you don’t feel comfortable with the clubs then you will probably want to delve into a more technical process of choosing your shaft flex. This is accomplished by closely analyzing your swing, and deciding from there what the best course of action is.

The speed of your swing is the biggest factor when you decide to get into the more technical side of shaft flex choice. It all depends on how you swing the club. The fastest swingers tend to stick with stiffer shafts – if your club travels like greased lightning, then the XS style shaft is probably the best choice for you. If you tend to have a slower and more controlled swing, you can stick with R or even L. The letters are arbitrarily assigned based on data gathered on swinging habits, and if you are a man that needs a “Ladies” style shaft, there is no shame in sticking with what you need in order to play your best.

The material of the shaft can also affect the way that you swing it. Graphite and steel are the two materials that almost every golf club is made out of, and each of them is very distinct when you look at them from a flex viewpoint. Steel clubs have a lower torque rating, which means that they will be useful more to one group of golfers than another. When you are faced with the choice of picking new golf clubs, it is a good idea to know which one you prefer so that you can choose the one that you will be most accustomed to.

Picking the flex level of a new set of golf clubs can be one of the hardest choices you will make, especially if you are new to golfing. But once you try out enough and get a feel for your personal needs, you will know it for the future. Every time you buy clubs from then on, you will know exactly what to choose, and you will always be able to stick with the same clubs. This allows you to really be constant in your game, and improve your skill.

Choosing The Best Golf Club Brand For Beginners

Posted by admin | Sports Travel | Posted on March 19th, 2010

There are so many different companies that claim to offer the best golf clubs or the most scientifically innovative technology. For a beginner, these numerous companies competing for your money can seem rather overwhelming. If you want to choose the best golf clubs for your current skill level, you will have to try out many different models. All of the leading brands offer some sort of beginners deal that will help you to get started. This might be an adjustable club that will work in almost any situation, or a half-set of clubs with all of the higher skill level clubs removed from the collection. No matter what brand you decide on, you should definitely never buy golf clubs that are outside of your skill level. This is the most detrimental thing that you could possibly do.

Ping is one of the best brand names in golfing, especially for new golfers. All of their professional level equipment receives top notch reviews from all of the golfing magazines. The best part is that they offer adjustable clubs and half sets for beginners. You can head out to the golf course with just a few different clubs that will adjust to different styles. This small selection will allow you to truly hone your skills and become very good at your stroke technique. After you have done this, you may decide to graduate up to a full golf club set that has all 14 varieties. At this point, you will know exactly what clubs to use in a given situation, and be able to choose the best one at any time.

Cobra is a manufacturer that is famous for their drivers. Some golfers prefer to get all of their clubs from the same company, but some are more adventurous and are willing to mix and match in order to get all of the best possible clubs in each category. Usually beginners will have the hardest time with drivers, sometimes hitting the ball so far off of the intended course that it is extremely frustrating. Cobra drivers are known for being a little bit more forgiving, and will make a perfect start for a golfer that is trying to become accustomed to the intricacies of making a long and accurate drive down the course.

Titleist is another one of the most famous names in the golfing world, and their products are used by professionals all around the world. They offer a great beginner set of golf clubs that are the next best things to getting a private tutor. In order to get the golf clubs that allow for the best learning for beginners, you may have to spend a bit of money. While you can always buy used clubs or older models, these won’t give you the high quality of training clubs offered by the larger name brands. But before you buy anything, you should definitely try out the product in question and make sure that it performs up to your expectations on the golf course.

Buying a golf club is a process that requires a lot of patience and perseverance. As you visit all of the various stores and try out quite a few different clubs, you may grow weary with the effort required to continue searching. Just remember that in the end, the enjoyment will be well worth it.

How to Choose a Day Camp

Posted by admin | Camping | Posted on March 19th, 2010

If you’re a parent considering summer camp opportunities for your child, you might consider a day camp rather than (or in addition to) a sleepaway camp experience.

Parents often view sending their kids to day camps as a “stepping stone” to overnight camp. They might think day camps are for “younger kids” and sleepaway camps are for older ones. In some cases this is might be true, but not always.

In fact, some day camps actually specialize in meeting the unique needs of older kids who don’t want to go to sleepaway camp, but who still require worthwhile activities and adult supervision during the summer.

Activities at such day camps are often designed for the teen or “tween” age group.

One of the advantages you have as a parent when comparing day camps to overnight camps (or even day camps to day camps) is that a day camp’s customer base is generally restricted to its local geographical area. This makes things easier for you to learn more about the camp.

For example, you can contact the camp’s current or former customers for references, and you can even visit the camp before making a decision.

So how do you know you’re picking the right day camp for your child? We’ve indirectly touched on a few points above. In particular, though, we recommend following 4-point checklist to help ensure the day camp you choose is the right one for your child.

1. Make sure the day camp is ACA accredited

If the day camp you’re considering is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA), then you are assured it meets or exceeds up to 300 best-practice industry standards relating to camper health and safety, program quality, camper supervision, activity planning, transportation and more. If the day camp you’re considering is not ACA-accredited, ask the camp director why not.

2. Check references

Since day camps primarily serve local customers, it should not be difficult to find a few families who’ve attended the camp before. Talk to them about their impressions of the program. If you hear good things, you might have a winner. Mixed reviews, on the other hand, could be a “red flag” alerting you to research the camp further. But if everyone you speak with has only negative things to say, then rule that day camp out, pat yourself on the back for taking the time to conduct a thorough investigation, and keep looking for a different camp.

3. Involve your child in the decision making process

Research shows that kids enjoy camp more when they’re included in the decision-making process. Since there are so many different types of day camps to choose from, it’s important to match your child’s interests and personality with the activities the day camp offers. Accordingly, it’s advisable to take a tour of the camp and/or attend an open house together with your child. After you’ve toured the camp, ask for your child’s opinion. This can be a much better approach than unilaterally deciding which day camp your child will attend without consulting them ahead of time, as asking for their input means they’ll probably have a more positive camp experience in the end.

4. Tour the camp and meet the staff

Most day camps hold open houses or organized facility tours during the prime camp enrollment season (generally springtime). These events are great opportunities for you to meet the staff, ask questions and see how the camp operates on a day-to-day basis. You might even decide to attend several camps’ open houses for a point of comparison and to see where you get the best “vibe.” In this author’s opinion, attending a day camp open house or touring the facility is the single BEST way to see what you’re getting into ahead of time.

Camp is such a personal experience. You want your child to connect with his or her counselors on a personal level and admire them as leaders and role models. You owe it to yourself and your child to pick a day camp that your child will look back on later in life and say, “I remember that camp, and it was the best experience of my life!”

Your child deserves the best. It’s your responsibility as a parent to put him or her in an environment where they can thrive, and choosing the right day camp can make this happen for you.

Happy day camping!

Bringing Your Golf Accessories To The Course

Posted by admin | Sports Travel | Posted on March 18th, 2010

You can buy all the golf accessories that you want, but none of them are going to do you much good unless you have them with you while you are playing the game. Keeping your golf accessories on hand may be a bit of a hassle, but when they come in handy you will be glad that you went through the trouble. There are many different ways that you can carry your golf accessories with you, and here I will discuss some of the most practical solutions. If you have just recently stocked up on golf accessories and you are looking for a solution to the predicament of portability, you will probably encounter some information that will be very beneficial to your cause.

Your golf bag probably has quite a few compartments that are not filled up by the actual golf clubs themselves. Do you have these compartments stuffed to the max? Since you will be carrying your golf club bag with you anyways, you might as well make the best of it and include some of the accessories that you are most likely to need while playing your game. This could include extra balls and tees, a small club repair kit, extra sunblock, a first aid kit, and anything else that you might think of. As long as it can fit, put it in there. It will be especially convenient if everything ends up fitting inside of the golf bag.

Just for the sake of making sure that you are taken care of, let us assume that you can’t fit everything inside of the golf bag and you would like to take more along with you. Should you just carry it along with you and leave it in the golf cart? Well, that’s exactly what you should do. Get some sort of backpack or duffel bag that you can fill with all of your accessories that you may need in the middle of the game, and keep it under your seat in the golf cart. Before you get together with your friends to go golfing, tell them what all you have. If several people bring the same thing when only one is needed, unnecessary space will be taken up just to keep everything and everyone inside of the golf cart.

In order to bring everything you want along with you, you will need to be realistic in deciding what you really want to bring along. Do you need a golf club cleaner when you are just going out to play a couple of holes? Wouldn’t a rag be just fine for touching up the club before you put it back into the bag? While these various accessories may seem worthless if you don’t bring them along, you just have to keep telling yourself that you will be able to enjoy their functionality once you arrive back home. This will provide you with motivation to not bring the unnecessary items.

There are always things that can help you out in the middle of a game, and you will need to simply recognize which ones they are. Once you have figured out what will really be helpful while golfing, you can start to figure out the method of getting them around with you as you traverse the golf course.
