El Cid had its humble beginnings in one of the world’s best-kept vacation destination Mazatlan. However, over the years, the company has expanded and is now one of the leaders in resorts and recreation industry. Here’s a quick look back at the history of El Cid.
1972: In November, El Cid was officially formed by Don Julio Berdegue. He later became the Chairman of the Board of Directors and inaugurated the company’s first Country Club and nine-hole golf course in Mazatlan. Today, the golf course has expanded to 27 holes, some of which were designed by golf personality Lee Trevino. The country club also has tennis and racquetball courts, lap pool, fitness center, steam, sauna, spa, restaurants and sushi bars, and member’s lounge.
1974: The El Cid Granada Hotela and Country Club was developed. The concept of All-Inclusive and European Plans was also introduced. The Granada caters to customers with its 126 rooms, pool, and restaurant.
1982: Hotel Castilla Beach was opened, with 393 rooms that offered visitors a fabulous view of the ocean from private balconies. It has a swimming pool and a Kids Club. The Castilla Beach Hotel embraced the concepts of All-Inclusive and European Plans.
1989: El Cid El Moro, the first tower from the company, was inaugurated and became a favorite among El Cid Vacations Club members. The tower boasts 314 rooms in 28 floors, ranging from junior suites to multiple rooms complete with kitchen, as well as beach, pool with waterfalls, restaurants, and many other attractions. El Cid Vacations Club members prefer this property because of its European Plan.
1995: In line with the company’s expansion, Hotel Marina was built. The hotel features 210 suites, swimming pools with waterfalls, restaurant, and a private beach. Guests can retreat on All-Inclusive or European Plans. The Hotel Marina El Cid is complemented by a marina operated by Aries Fleet. It accommodates 120 boats, of lengths 25 to 120 feet, and offers services like fishing, sailing and cruises.
2001: Hotel La Ceiba was purchased, heading the group’s expansion to the east and Mexican Caribbean. La Ceiba is located on Cozumel Island, and boasts 60 rooms with ocean view, private balconies, and marble details. It offers snorkeling and scuba diving to visitors who want to see marine life.
2006: In February, the Hotel Marina El Cid Spa and Beach Resort was established in the unique location of Puerto Morelos, a 15-minute drive from the city of Cancun/ Riviera Maya. The hotel is across one of the largest coral reef in the world. Aside from the regular pools, restaurants, and shops, a convention center was added in 2007.
